Increased coordination between peshmerga and Iraqi forces crucial for fight against ISIS: PM Barzani in coalition


ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan region, Masrour Barzani, on Wednesday received the acting special envoy of the United States for the Global Coalition against ISIS, John Godfrey, to discuss and help coordinate the ongoing struggle against the extremist group in Iraq and Syria.

Godfrey “expressed concern over the development of terrorist threats from ISIS in distinct parts of Iraq and Syria, and stressed the need to continue to support the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi military to cope to these threats and achieve stability in the region, “a statement read. published by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The envoy also said that a special Coalition meeting is scheduled for next week in the Italian capital of Rome.

Barzani thanked the Coalition for its support for the Peshmerga forces and said the activation of joint security coordination centers between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi military is an important step in deterring IS threats.

At the end of May, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said it would establish a joint security coordination center between the army and the Peshmerga of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in Kirkuk.

The joint venture was the first after the establishment of security cooperation centers in the regions, which became hotbeds of ISIS activity following the group’s territorial defeat in Iraq in 2017.
