Iranian Soleimani told Iraqi militias to “prepare for proxy war”
The commander of Iranian extraterritorial military operations recently met with various Iraqi Shiite militias, telling them to “prepare for a proxy war,” according to a report by The Guardian.
Qassem Soleimani, Quds Force Met All Iran-Controlled Militia Leaders Three Weeks Ago, Two Anonymous Senior Intelligence Officials are quoted as saying, and this heightened concern among US officials that US targets in the region could be seriously threatened.
Previously, US officials had referred to “intelligence” indicating that there were threats against their interests and this was cited as a reason for sending more forces to the Persian Gulf. Soleimani’s meeting with the militias is now additional information leaked to the media.
Intelligence on Soleimani’s meeting led to a series of diplomatic activities, including that of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sudden visit to Iraq last week to discuss the safety of US personnel in the country, including a large military contingent.
The United States has become very intolerant of Iran’s extraterritorial and often clandestine activities; fund and arm militant groups in the Middle East, North Africa and beyond.
